英訳で読む芭蕉の俳句の世界『松尾芭蕉を旅する』（ピーター・J・マクミラン）

この訳者マクミランさんは、朝日新聞に連載している「星の林に」で日本の詩歌を英訳しています。私はそれをずっと読んでいるファンなので、この本が出てすぐに買いました。

芭蕉の俳句も大好きで、このブログの最初にも書いたように、『奥の細道』への旅もしました。

まずどんな俳句が選ばれているのかと興味しんしんでしたが、私の好きな俳句が全部入っていて、満足しました。

まず花、４句

「山路来て何やらゆかしすみれ草」On this mountain path,somehow tugging at my heart-a wild violet.

「何の木の花とはしらず匂哉」What could that tree be whose blossoms I do not know? Sacred fragrance！

「くたびれて宿かるころや藤の花」Searching for an inn at twilight tired from a long day’s journey-Encountering, wistfully, wisteria.

「どむみりとあふちや雨の花曇」In a cloud-filled sky of light rain, Persian lilac-a cloud of bloom.

次は、子を思う親の気持ちの１句。

「ちゝはゝのしきりにこひし雉の声」In the cry of the pheasants-who love their children so-how much I miss you, Mother, Father.

 そして神々しいもの2つ。

「あらたうと青葉若葉の日の光」On sacred Mount Nikko new leaves, green leaves-radiant in the light of the sun.

 「五月雨の降残してや光堂」 All these years and rainy seasons,was it only you that was spared、 Sacred Hall of Gold？

一番有名な1句。

「荒海や佐渡によこたふ天河」Above the rough seas,stretching herself out over Sado Island-The Milky Way.

選ばれた80句の最後で、芭蕉の最後の句

「旅に病で夢は枯れ野をかけ廻る」Ill on the journey, the dream takes off runs around withered fields.

 日本と彼の故郷・アイルランドとの共通点や父母を偲ぶ気持ちなど、楽しい本になっています。

そして、人生も旅であると。
